Sharon Sabella

FOUNDER

"Being a Realtor for 30 years, I've seen the massive gap of affordable independent apartments for disabled adults, and seniors who are capable of taking care of themselves and an apartment with some outside help."

Sharon's Story

I have been a full-time realtor for 30 years practicing in all aspects of real estate. Over those 30 years I have
discovered a large group of people who could not afford to rent or purchase a home. This group mainly
consisted of people with physical disabilities, mental illness or people who were veterans or senior citizens.
I began to learn of these difficulties within these families when it hit close to home. My son began
showing signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 3. As he got older he began showing signs of mental illness also.

I found out that it was very difficult to find psychiatrists skilled in diagnosing and prescribing medication
properly. The psychiatrists who were able to help my son, I couldn’t afford and insurance companies either
didn’t cover mental health or didn’t cover enough of the cost.

I became a realtor so I could have flexible hours and be able to take care of my son. As I began to meet
clients who also had mental illness in their families and were looking for help, I gave them what little Knowledge I had learned through experience. I found that there wasn’t much information out there for families like my own.

As my son became an adult there was little in the way of housing for him. Even now, a halfway house is
the only available living arrangement for a stable adult with mental illness because apartments are usually too expensive for someone on a fixed disability income.

Some veterans have the same housing problems if they are physically disabled or mentally disabled or
both. They are living on a fixed income also and can’t find affordable housing. Senior citizens can have housing issues also, but their needs are different. They may have family who they can live with, but that can quickly become a stressful living arrangement. Other seniors may no longer be able to afford their own homes or may not be able to safely function in their two story homes. They need to be able to find affordable and senior friendly rental homes.

As a senior myself, I need to make sure that my son is going to be taken care of and not a burden on my
family when I am no longer here. I want him to be independent and have a purpose in life. That is why I started the non-profit, Independent Specialized Housing Group. My plan is to place people from these 3 groups into affordable housing and help meet their special needs.

First, I plan to bring doctors, social workers and therapists to their development since transportation to
their appointments can be a problem.

Second, I also plan to make available transportation to the tenants so they can go to the supermarket for groceries, the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions or to go do their banking.
Third, I want to create a social community for the tenants, so they no longer need to feel afraid or lonely.
Everyone will be asked to volunteer in any way that they feel comfortable in order to help take care of others
who may need it or to assist in taking care of the common areas. I feel this will help give the tenants a purpose and will also provide the social contact that is usually lacking.

I feel this is my purpose in life to fulfill this need for people like my son, for veterans and for senior
citizens. We all need a safe and affordable place to call home.
